trip to Agumbe and Cochin part 2

History

Kochi

(Malayalamകൊച്ചി, Kocci, formerly Cochin, is a major port city on the west coast of India by the Arabian Sea. Kochi is part of the district of Ernakulam in the state of Kerala. Kochi is often called by the name Ernakulam, which refers to the western part of the mainland Kochi. The civic body that governs the city is the Corporation of Cochin, which was constituted in the year 1967, and the statutory bodies that oversee its development are the Greater Cochin Development Authority and the Goshree Islands Development Authority. The city of Kochi (pop. 601,574) is Kerala's second largest city and is part of an extended metropolitan region (pop. 2.1 million), which is the largest urban agglomeration in Kerala. It is the most densely populated city in the state. Kochi city is also a part of Greater Cochin region[5][6] and is classified as a B-1 grade city[7] by the Government of India, making it the highest graded city in the state. Kochi ranks first in the total number of international and domestic tourists in Kerala.[8][9]
The city lies about 220 kilometres (137 mi) north of the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram and about 180 kilometres (112 mi) south of Kozhikode, the third largest city in Kerala.
In 1102 AD, Kochi became the seat of the Kingdom of Cochin, which traced its lineage to the Kulasekhara Empire. Heralded as the Queen of Arabian Sea, Kochi was an important spice trading centre on the Arabian Sea coast from the 14th century. Occupied by the Portuguese Empire in 1503, Kochi was the first of the European colonies in India. It remained the main seat of Portuguese India until 1530, when Goa was chosen instead. The city was later occupied by the Dutch and the British, with the Kingdom of Cochin becoming a princely state.

when we wer done we walked to the end of the beach and there is where we saw a checkerd keelbak and we saved it from a police that tried to kill it.
we were to tired to walk all the way back to b.b so we walked over to the Malabar house for lunch.

trip to Agumbe and Cochin part 1

Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS)

Agumbe situated 560 meters above sea level on the Sahyadri ranges (Western Ghats), a World bio-diversity hotspot is aptly called the Cherapunji of South India as it receives an average rainfall of 7000-8000mm annually. However not many know that these pristine forests are home to the longest venomous snake of the world - The King Cobra. Romulus Whitaker, the Snake Man of India fell in love with this place 35 years back where he caught his first King Cobra. After setting up the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust (MCBT- 1976) and Andaman and Nicobar Island Environmental Team (ANET- 1983) he returned back to Agumbe to setup the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station.
The main objective of ARRS is to study and conserve the rainforests of south India. Using the King Cobra as the flagship species ARRS attempts to establish the world's first King Cobra Sanctuary at Agumbe.

 MY DIARY

DAY 1
Today After a long train trip
we arrived to Mangalore central railway
and got on a very cool bus to Udupi.
We were very hungry so we stopped for a dosai and a juice.
Matilde (my mama) was worried because we had no clue how to
get to ARRS (Agumbe Rainforest Research Station) so we just took a taxi .
On the way we got a bit lost so we got there at 2:15pm
and only then did we have proper lunch.
After lunch you think we were going to settle down right ?
well you are totally wrong ,they invited us to see how Gauri Shankar
saved a KING COBRA from a villagers house .It was a beautiful 15min drive through the western ghats till we got to the house.
As I heard the poor villagers found out that they had the king in the kitchen at 9:00am ,informed Gauri at 11:00am
and we only went to get it a 3:30pm!!!!!!!!!!
It was a great experience to have a king a few meters away from you .
We got to ARRS at dinner time ,after the long day  we crashed in bed.

DAY 2
Today my mama  and I woke  to the songs of the birds so I wanted to stay in bed,
Well for the boys, they wanted to go on the bird walk and so they started packing ,I was very tempted so I too went .
The walk was fantastic!

we saw these birds.
greater racket tail drongo

red wattle lap wing

Malabar grey horn bill

yellow wattle lap wing.

After the walk we had a really good breakfast that was followed by a workshop on GIO and telemetry.
Lunch was served when we were done and then we did real life remote sensing.
What is remote sensing?
Remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon, without making physical contact with the object. In modern usage, the term generally refers to the use of aerial sensor technologies to detect and classify objects on Earth .

In this case we were holding the antenna and we were practising for tracing a snake (we did not actually put the transmitter in a snake but my brother and I hid it somewhere and the students had to find it using the antenna.

That was real fun .
Later in the evening my brother and I got chased by their pig Kania and then we went for a walk down by the river with Niti.
There she showed us tarantulas and thought us the names of many frogs.
When we came back it was dinner time already so I had super ,read and went to bed.

DAY 3

Today we all woke up with the idea of visiting some waterfalls so after
a breakfast of pasta my dad called a rickshaw and went to the Jogi Gondi falls.

It was a beautiful place full of little places to explore but best a all ...
a big rock pool!!!!!!
We spent the whole hot day there .
My brother and I made a house out of sticks so that we could fit in to hide from the sun then we had a swim and after that we spent half an hour watching a frog eat a dragonfly that we saw him catch.
After a hot day we had super and went to sleep at 7:30.

DAY 4

Today was kind of a free day ,we did not really do anything but look for dracos and play with Kania the pig.
In the afternoon after a little rain my dad took us for a little walk, it was very funny because it just rained so all the leeches came out and we were all wearing crocs so they got in from all sides and we were walking on leeches the whole way so when we got to the camp we rubbed our feet in salt .

DAY 5

Today we had to wake up at 4:00 am to catch the train to Cochin.
When we got to the train station it was pouring and on top of that we had to change coach 3 times .I did not like that trip at all but when we got to our hotel Brunton Boatyard and were received a warm welcome by
a very friendly looking lady, she came to us with a basket of perfumed towels to dab our sweaty faces and then she gave us a tiny glass of cardamom and ginger spiced water, that was delicious .

Our trip to Vedanthangal Lake Bird Sanctuary

HISTORY

Vedanthankal Lake Bird Sanctuary is a 30 ha (70-acre) sanctuary located in the Kancheepuram District of the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The sanctuary is about 75 km from Chennai on National Highway 45 (NH45) south of Chengalpattu.
Vedanthangal is a home for migratory birds, such as pintail, garganey, grey wagtail, blue-winged teal, common sandpiper and some more.[1].
Vedanthangal is at around one and half hour journey from Chennai. It is one of the oldest water bird sanctuaries in the country. Vedanthangal in Tamil language means 'hamlet of the hunter' [2]. This area was a favourite hunting spot for the local landlords 300 years ago. The region attracted a variety of birds because it was dotted with small lakes that acted as feeding grounds for the birds. Realising its ornithological importance, the British government undertook steps to develop Vedanthangal into a bird sanctuary as early as 1798. This was established in 1858 by the order of the Collector of Chingleput District.
The best time to visit this sanctuary is from November to March. During this time birds are mostly busy in building and maintaining their nests.
Villagers near this sanctuary are very concerned about the Sanctuary and the birds coming to this sanctuary, and they have taken many serious steps to avoid disturbance to the flow of birds.

One morning we went to

Vedanthankal

to see the birds because it was the season.
we took a tempo and we travelled for 2 and 1/2 hours.
We saw many birds of all types and we tried to tell which type they were.
It was not that easy but we learned a lot of new bird names, that we did not know .
We spent the whole day there .
We swam , watched ,played and even slept our morning  nap !!!
we had a great day ,with all our friends ,and family .
After a long day we all went back to the tempo and we went somewhere else
to eat lunch .
It was not so far away that we saw a beautiful place were there were no tourists ,there was a lake and  it was  quiet .

First we all had a pot-luck lunch and then all of us kids went in the lake to take a swim.
We made balls out of the algae that  we found in the lake and we had a competition of who made the biggest ball.
It was all great fun and we all were tired after so we all went home .

Everyone had a family picture at the view point.
We all dressed the
same without any  purpose!

Eden saw a dead bird in the water and took it out to see it better!!!!!

The sun was up and the birds were flying.

When there is a crowd of tourists in one spot ,this is what happens.

WE took great pics and we had a wonderful day!!!!!!!!

Home

This is where I live .
I live in a wonderful place called Auroville.
once it was a dream but now it's real.
I live in this place where you wake up with the songs of the birds,
and smell the fresh dew in the morning.
sometimes it can be hot,but we have a pool in Auroville and we can go and take a dip.
